Rehabilitation of the Kaiser mine dump in the Lugau-Oelsnitz coalfield

Objektplanung, Baugrundleistungen und Naturschutz: G.E.O.S. erbringt geotechnische Planungen für die nachhaltige Nutzung von Bergbaulandschaften

As part of the ERDF project ‘Prevention of risks from old mining’, G.E.O.S. was commissioned by the Saxon Mining Authority in 2019 with the general planning services for the site of the former Kaisergrube mine in Gersdorf and with a number of special services relating to ground and nature conservation.

The Kaisergruben dump presumably consists of the non-reusable mountain masses from hard coal mining and was filled between 1871 and 1931. Today, the slag heap is largely covered with woodland and partly used for commercial purposes and by a gardening and recreation community. Due to steep slopes, natural erosion and transformation processes in the body of the spoil heap as well as diffuse drainage, there are stability deficits and usage restrictions. This affects the future use of the waste rock pile and neighbouring areas. The remediation of the waste rock pile is intended to create stable slopes, minimise geotechnical hazards and achieve positive environmental effects.

The project was broken down into three remediation phases:

A - Demolition and remediation of the former Shaft II opencast facilities
B - Securing and preservation of shafts I and II
C - Dump remediation

G.E.O.S. was commissioned with the project planning and other special services for all of the sections.

G.E.O.S. provided the services for section A right through to implementation and documentation. The area of the former Shaft II surface facilities was renaturalised following the demolition of all buildings and facilities and the removal of contaminated soil areas.

G.E.O.S. finalised the planning for remediation section B up to the completion of the safekeeping of Shaft II. However, the safekeeping of Shaft I was postponed for the time being, so that the services for this area were finalised in preparation for the awarding of the execution of the contract.

The project and therefore the safekeeping of Shaft I is to be continued by the Free State of Saxony as part of the specialised concept for dealing with the mining impacts of the former Lugau/Oelsnitz coalfield, as Shaft I is considered the preferred option for an emergency water overflow/storage.
