BIOMIMIC: Innovative biotechnological methods for effective metal recovery from secondary materials

The aim of the ERA-MIN2 research project BIOMIMIC is to develop new biotechnological and metallurgical methods for the selective concentration of valuable metals from diluted solutions. Commercially available leaching techniques are combined with biotechnological methods for metal extraction using natural microbial processes, innovative bioreactors and new biosorbents. BIOMIMIC thus creates the necessary prerequisites for processing previously unusable residues with significant metal contents but complex matrixes.

In addition to the technical aspects of process development, the aim is to reduce investment risks by increasing knowledge and assessing the technical and economic feasibility of these technologies. Furthermore, G.E.O.S. and other project partners are assessing the environmental impact of the developed technologies and their potential contribution to the supply of strategically important metals to Europe.

Our Services

  • Research on conventional industrial processes for the separation of metals from secondary raw materials
  • Assessment of the potential of various mining waters and secondary materials for metal recovery.
  • Indirect and direct biometallurgical treatment of metal-containing leaching solutions for metal precipitation and separation
  • Verification of the feasibility of sulphate reduction and selective metal separation in a bioreactor from mining water (small-scale)
  • Data for the evaluation of the technical feasibility and economic efficiency of the developed process and for the evaluation according to environmental aspects
