Remediation of uranium mining legacies in Central Asia: project management, project control and construction supervision

In the past years, the G.E.O.S. branch WISUTEC developed remediation concepts for a total of 7 abandoned mining and processing sites on behalf of the European Commission. This was preceded by extensive investigations and environmental assessments. The project is part of an internationally financed programme to rehabilitate the legacy of uranium mining in the former Soviet Union on the territory of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

After the financing was secured and a fund was set up within the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the construction works were successively put out to tender. WISUTEC is currently managing and controlling the sub-projects in Kyrgyzstan, commissioned by the Ministry of Disaster Management of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and financed by the EBRD. For this purpose, WISUTEC is involved in a Project Management Unit (PMU) in Bishkek with its own staff. In 2020, the construction contracts for the Min-Kush and Shekaftar sites were awarded and construction works began.
